With 41 points from Melissa Vargas, Turkey overcame world champions Serbia in the final match and won the gold medal at European Championship in September.
Melissa also won the award for the Most Valuable Player at the championship, thanks to stellar performances during the competition played in Belgium.
With Melissa the national team won 22 consecutive games between June 29 and September 24 in 2023. In that period, Turkey completed the final stage of the Nations League, European Championship and Olympic Qualification Round/FIVB World Cup matches undefeated.
Due to the national team’s recent successes, particularly since the 2019 summer season, women’s volleyball has surged in popularity and is now among the most widely followed sports in Turkey.
